Doubles, Doubles, Toil and Trouble!

Since it's the month of Halloween AND many of the students are working on learning the double addition facts, I thought I would post a few resources relating to learning the doubles for addition. (1+1 =2, 2+2 = 4, ....9+9=18). It is very helpful for students to learn the doubles facts as they can use them to solve other facts by adding or subtracting 1. For example, if they know that 8 + 8 = 16, then they can do 8 + 9 (Adding doubles +1). Since 8 + 8 is 16, then 8 + 9 is one more, which is 17.

Watch the Youtube video below as Mr. Moser plays his guitar and sings the Doubles Song with his students.

This is a great little song about doubles with visuals for students to connect with while singing the song.

Hands On Math Game- Doubles Snap
This game is FUN and you only need 1 dice and approximately 20 counters per pair of students.
  1. Students pair up.
  2. One student rolls the dice. The students try to say the doubles fact as quickly as possible.
  3. Whoever says it first, gets a counter(token) from the pile.
  4. The other student rolls the dice. Once again, they try to say the fact as quickly as possible.
Note: This game does get a LITTLE loud! However, students are very engaged. I had the students say the equation (number sentence) for the doubles fact instead of just the sum. So, they had to say 6 +6 = 12, not just 12. Also, this same game can be played with regular playing cards, using only the Ace - 9, with the Ace being a 1. This way they can practice doubles up to 18 instead of just 12.

Math Doubles Interactive Websites and Online Resources

I have created a track with a variety of interactive websites and online resources for practicing doubles. There are some very engaging activities that your students will motivate your students, such as the Doubles Dart Board! You will also find another video and a PowerPoint for the Doubles Rap. Click here to view these resources.

One Last Thought....
Perhaps you could have your students create their own story problems with doubles facts, and draw Halloween pictures to represent this problem. Then, you could have a Bulletin Board that says "Doubles, Doubles, Toil & Trouble!" with a big "witches pot and their doubles fact pictures!
Hope you find these helpful!
