PeRIMiter and Area of Rectangles

Recently, I took at closer look at a variety of ways we could engage students in Perimeter and Area activities. What is perimeter? (perRIMiter...going around the rim) What is area? One of Marzano's effective instructional strategies is "Identifying Similarities and Differences". Therefore, asking students to also compare area and perimeter via a Venn Diagram may be a great way to assess their understandings.

The following track of resources includes videos, songs, interactive websites, and kinesthetic activities that may better help your students understand perimeter and area. You will also see an interactive Venn diagram tool and a Venn Diagram Word document that you can utilize for this topic and others.

Keep in mind...there's nothing better than having THEM discover the relationship between perimeter and area. If they are simply TOLD, it will not have the last effect that hands-on inquiry activities do! Hope this helps address a variety of learning styles!
