Amitola's Rhyme for Multiplication

The other day, while in a 3rd grade classroom, we chanted a few rhymes that I find helpful in remembering multiplication facts...such as:

  • 8 X 8 fell on the floor, picked it up and it was 64. Of course, while saying this rhyme we show 8 fingers (twice), fall on the floor, and then stand back up, clap, and say..."64"
  • I then shared 7 X 8 with them. I didn't have a rhyme, but shared with them that the product is 56....so notice the 5, 6, 7, 8. We then said 7 X 8 = 56. Then, we went low to the ground and marched up imaginary stairs, getting taller as we said..."5, 6, 7, 8".
I then challenged the students to come up with some of their own rhymes to help them remember some of the multiplication facts. Kids are very clever, don't you know?

Amitola had one within the next few minutes...

3 X 3 fell down a mine
Climbed back up and it became 9!

Looking forward to adding a few more rhymes to the blog! Keep thinking creatively kiddos! :-)
