"One Strategy Doesn't Fit ALL!"

For many students, the traditional algorithms can be difficult.  Sometimes offering an alternative strategy for solving problems can be helpful.  Below you will find some quick YouTube tutorials that show these strategies.  Keep in mind, what works for one....might not work for another.  The more strategies we give students, the more likely one will "click"! :-)

Alternate Addition Strategy: Partial Sums

Lattice Multiplication

Division: Partial Quotients

Just for Fun!:  Multiplication-Mayan Math
The following strategy works well with small 2 digit numbers.  Beyond that, in my opinion...it gets a bit complicated!  However, would be interesting to see if any of your students could analyze this strategy and determine why it actually works!

A Little Strategy Humor
The following video links below provide a little humor.  If you don't teach your kids a few correct alternative strategies....they might come up with their own! :-)
